Ode to togetherness

Writer's picture: Emilee JacobsonEmilee Jacobson

oh days, those days that weren’t so long ago the days we lived our lives, the days we didn’t know.

oh days, those days we sat together, unphased –

by the idea of being apart never, not once thinking

this is only the start

oh days, those days we were tourists without fear

coming and going as we pleased

back into the arms of those dear.

oh days, those days we loved to explore places without bounds --

the wilderness at its core.

now, that the national parks closed their doors

we’re forced to take virtual tours

from the indoors.

TSA checks were for

catching bombs and lies

to uncover disguises draped with demise

today, we slip through,

no one asks why.

it’s like people think this virus spreads

through eye-contact so, we follow the ground

and never look back

friends? family? want to see them once more?

don’t worry, that’s what zoom calls are for.

But forget the hug Or a first handshake

Instead, type in the chat box

it’s the safest way to relate

wear a mask in public

before it’s too late a drop of the virus

will decide your fate

first it was the elderly, then the immunocompromised.

don’t you people get it? this virus doesn’t discriminate

by any shape or size

we’ve surpassed 50,000 deaths the news says there’ll be much more

what life is left to live when you don’t know what for?

how many lies will it take to come to some kind of truth?

Because the only one I’ve come to know is the life we knew is over — ahead is something new.

First Wuhan, then Thailand

What’s there to fear?

America’s exceptional,

people die to come here

Oh days, those days are long-gone memories

of the America we loved

before a mass quarantine
